The Mermaid- Original oil painting
The Mermaid is a painting depicting my version of The Little Mermaid. She's an adult, not so childish and little, and instead of the original ending by Hans Christian Anderson where she chooses to end her life, the Mermaid chooses to cut her hair, changing the expectations that she had for herself. She finds joy and peace and excitement in her new life even though it's nothing like what she had expected. The mosaic behind her represents her old life as a mermaid, broken shells and dead fish show that it wasn't perfect, the cut on her ankle shows that her new life won't be perfect either, but choosing to embrace the new life and where it may lead brings her a newfound sense of joy.
This painting began years ago, and started as acrylic. For the longest time I struggled to know how to complete it, and it sat unfinished in my spare room. Finally I knew what I needed to do to finish the painting: a bold mosaic hidden under our Mermaid, depicting the life she left behind, and filled with symbolism. This painting is 36”x 48” and comes wired, with a thin black frame. It is embellished with gold leaf. This painting can be shipped or picked up or dropped off locally, to save on shipping costs (within 30 minutes of the Twin Cities).
